New to hockey, start here.

Hockey can give you and your child a lifetime of wonderful moments and fun. Whether it's fighting for a gold medal, skating with neighbourhood friends, or helping out at the rink - we are excited to welcome you!

Learn to Play

The St. Albert Minor Hockey Assocation Learn to Play program is designed for players under the age of 12 who are new to hockey. We aim to introduce hockey to players and their families to support their ongoing participation in the sport. We want to ensure all players have a memorable and fun experience on the ice.

This 10-week program is led by certified instructors and will maintain a ratio of 1 coach for every four players. The program runs from November 19th to early February.

Players can anticipate being grouped with players of similar age and, each week, will participate in a 45-minute session.

Participants require full hockey gear to participate in this program.

Intro to Hockey

Players at this age are taking their early strides in the game. Our focus is to ensure this is a positive experience and a place to form friendships and develop hockey skills through fun and fair play.

The goals and objectives of the Intro to Hockey (U5, U7 & U9) programming are to:
  • Teach the basic skills of hockey so players can enjoy the game.
  • Assist in the development and enhancement of physical literacy and basic motor patterns.
  • Deliver an appropriate program for the players' size, skill, and age.
  • Encourage the aspects of fitness, fair play and cooperation while having fun playing the game.
*If your player was born in 2014 or later, learn more about Community Hockey.
**U7 and U5 Intro to Hockey programs will have 2-3 breaks in programming.
