Quickcard Minor Hockey Week is just around the corner! Things officially kick off on Friday, January 10th. St. Albert Minor Hockey has 72 teams participating in this ten-day tournament.

The Hockey Edmonton Quickcard Minor Hockey Committee has developed two documents with information about the tournament and what to expect.

Quickcard Minor Hockey Week Arena Abbreviation Guide

Admission 
Adult spectators must pay admission to attend Minor Hockey Week games. Adult Admission (18-65 years) is $5 for a tournament access button.
Purchasing a button gives you access to all Minor Hockey Week games and a small premium-roast coffee at participating McDonald's Restaurants.
Please stop at the entrance to the arena and buy your button. St. Albert Minor Hockey purchases four buttons for each team; these are for coaches and will be available to pick up before the first game of the tournament.
Volunteers 
There is a tremendous volunteer commitment required to execute this tournament successfully. This year, the association is required to provide over 500 volunteer hours to participate in the tournament.
The St. Albert Minor Hockey community has wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time throughout the hockey season, and they will be out in full force during this tournament. We thank you in advance for your time!
A full volunteer schedule will be made available as soon as we receive a schedule from the MHW Tournament Organizing Committee.
Tournament Rules 
The rules of play during Minor Hockey Week are different than league play.
Some key differences are:
  • Games are shorter
  • Games are straight-time/running-time
  • Penalties are straight-time from the drop of the puck (2, 5 or 10 minutes)

Participating SAMHA teams are expected to uphold the tournament rules and abide by the Code of Conduct. Additionally, all coaches are expected to maintain the highest standards of personal conduct and support the principles of fair play.

Minor Hockey Week FAQ

What is Minor Hockey Week (MHW)?

MHW is a two-week tournament that is sanctioned by Hockey Alberta and run through Hockey Edmonton. All St. Albert Minor Hockey teams who play in the EFHL are invited to attend (U9-U18). 

What is St. Albert Minor Hockey's contribution to Minor Hockey Week?

Hockey Edmonton requires our Association to provide the following: 

  • Approx. 100 hours of billable ice 
  • 2 full-time Arena Managers for JIA/Kinex and Servus Credit Union Place over 10 days (92 hours)
  • 105 volunteers to sell admission (buttons)  
  • Timekeeper for every STA home game; approx. 80 games 
Where does the money from admission sales go for the tournament?

Minor Hockey Week is a Hockey Edmonton tournament; any proceeds raised from the event support Hockey Edmonton programs. 

How many games do teams play?

Teams participate in a minimum of two games.

How much does it cost to play in MHW?

Hockey Edmonton sets the tournament fee each year. In 2025 it will be $240

Are there admission costs?

Who pays for the referees?

During Minor Hockey Week, the Arena Manager pays the referees.
