Become a Referee in St. Albert

2025 - 2026

Are you interested in becoming a referee this season? Officiating is a great way to stay involved in the game, build confidence, and earn money while supporting minor hockey in our community.

Eligibility

  • Must be 13 years old by December 31, 2025

How to Get Started

To become a certified official, all new referees must:

  1. Complete an online officiating course

  2. Attend an in-person clinic

Clinic Fees

  • Online Course: $22.05

  • In-Person Clinic: $142.55

What You’ll Need

Provided at your in-person clinic:

  • Hockey Alberta sweater crest

  • Hockey Canada shoulder patch

Additional gear required:

  • Red armband and jersey (available at Source for Sports, United Cycle, Pro Hockey Life, etc.)

  • Black CSA-certified helmet

  • CSA-certified visor

  • Black or metal whistle (Acme Thunderer recommended)

  • Black skates with white laces (preferred)

  • Black pants

Estimated Equipment Cost: $300–$400
Used gear may be available to help reduce costs.

In-Person Clinic Requirements

Please bring the following items to your in-person clinic:

  • Skates

  • CSA-certified helmet

  • Whistle

Returning Referee 2025–2026

All returning officials are required to complete a certification clinic annually between August 1 and December 31.

New this season: Clinics now include a combination of eLearning and in-person instruction.

If you complete your clinic outside of St. Albert, please notify the Referee-in-Chief (RIC) to confirm your completion.

Important: Officials who do not complete the required clinic will be ineligible to officiate during the 2025–2026 season.
