U9 (2017-2018)

Players will be assigned to an assessment group based on their skill skate assessment.

All U9 players will participate in two scrimmage skates.

At St. Albert Minor Hockey, our goal is to ensure that your child enjoys their hockey experience while developing their skills in a supportive and structured environment. A key part of this is the player evaluation process, which helps set your player up for a successful season.

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you better understand this process:

What role do SAMHA coaches play in the evaluation process?

Named SAMHA coaches participate in a draft and can choose from a list of available players.

Coaches watch evaluation sessions and record their notes to support this process. This information is not used to determine player rankings.

*U9 and U11 players are placed on teams based on their final rankings. Coaches may make trades within the same tier before the release of official rosters.

Is my child being watched?

Yes. Each session has a minimum of three evaluators. In divisions with three scrimmages, a player will be evaluated a minimum of 30 times.

U9: Two scrimmages 

U11: Three scrimmages

When will I receive my player’s skate time?

Skate times will be communicated closer to the start of the season and posted on the association website.

 

What if I don’t receive a skate time?

If you haven’t received your player’s skate time 48 hours before your division’s sessions begin, please email:

What is the player evaluation appeal process?

An internal appeal mechanism is hereby established for the limited purpose of whether player selection was not made according to the rules or process.

Dissatisfaction with the selection of head coach or assistant coach are not grounds for appeal.

Any appeal shall be made via email to the Evaluations Director (evaluationdirector@samha.ca).

The Evaluations Committee shall evaluate whether the appellant has valid grounds for appeal. There is a $100 fee to initiate the appeal process; should the Committee determine that there are grounds for appeal this amount is refunded.

If no valid grounds for appeal exist, the Evaluation Director shall notify the appellant in writing that the appeal will not be heard.

If valid grounds for appeal exist, the Evaluation Director shall then convene an appeal hearing before the Executive Board of Directors within 7 days.

The appellant shall present evidence and testimony to the Board. Following testimony, the Executive Board of Directors shall close the hearing, begin deliberations and render a written decision via email within 24 hours. An internal appeal mechanism is hereby established for the limited purpose of whether player selection was not made according to the rules or process.

Can I request to play with a friend?

Yes, in U9 and below, we accept placement requests.

Please note that all requests must be reciprocated, and while we cannot guarantee placement, we will do our best to accommodate matched requests.

Our evaluation process, aligned with the Hockey Alberta Alberta One Player Development Model, places players with similar abilities into appropriate tiers to support skill development.

Who is doing the player evaluations?

This season, we will continue to work with 200 Hockey Development, a team of professional evaluators. To learn more about their credentials and staff, please visit their website.

 

How many evaluators are there at each session?

Most sessions have between 2-3 evaluators at the rink.

Why are the evaluators on their phones instead of writing?

We use TeamGenius, a digital evaluation app that allows real-time entry of ratings and notes. This system improves accuracy, eliminates paper handling, and allows us to collect and analyze data more effectively.
