Referee In Chief:  Joe Becigneul, (780) 242-0854 e-mail: refinchief@samha.ca or joeb1@shaw.ca

Welcome to the 2024 - 2025 hockey season. Every new and returning official in Alberta must register with the North Region as having completed a re-certification clinic by December 15, 2024. There will be approximately 60 scheduled clinics in the North Zone this season over 12 different weekends starting in September 2024.

*The New and Returning Officials clinics in St. Albert are scheduled for October 5th.

The requirements to attend all clinics are listed below. All clinics have online pre-registration. As space fills quickly, it is suggested that you contact the listed clinic contact person as soon as possible. The minimum age for new officials is 13 years of age before December 31, 2024.

First Year Officials and officials not registered with Hockey Canada or Hockey Alberta during the 2023 - 2024 season.

- You must complete the eLearning component from Hockey Canada prior to being eligible to register in a clinic.  Obtain the link for this program from Joe Becigneul, RIC. The eLearning tutorial is usually open by mid-August.

- Attended by officials who will be 13 to 15 years old before Jan 1, 2025 and any level two official and above who does not have continuous service with Hockey Alberta or another branch of Hockey Canada.

- Also attended by all officials who were not registered in the 2023-2024 season including officials who may have taken a year or two off and did not register last season.

- The clinic will be 8 hours of classroom and on-ice instruction.

CLINIC INFORMATION

There is a fee for your instructional clinic. You register on-line for the clinic and pay all of your fees at the same time.  You must complete your eLearning to be eligible to register in the classroom.

The St. Albert clinic for First-year officials for 2024 is tentatively scheduled for October 5, 2024.  The times will be between 8:00 am to 4:30 pm inclusive. If you do not attend the full clinic, you will not be able to referee hockey. Rule/casebooks (required) are available for free as a download from the Hockey Canada APP. They no longer sell a printed rulebook. There are other fees to pay as well, such as Hockey Canada Fees, Hockey Alberta Fee, referee level fee (you are a level 1 official if you will NOT be 15 years of age before December 31, 2024. You will not need your full referee gear for this clinic (list of required items in another file).

The Canadian Hockey Association has a MANDATORY INSURANCE FEE. This fee must be paid, and the only exception will be for officials who will be playing on a CHA / Hockey Alberta registered hockey team, in which case the team will be paying the insurance fees for you from your registration fees as a player. All minor hockey teams fall into this category, however, many old timers, commercial teams and beer league teams do not.

Other requirements for first year officials include: Hockey Alberta sweater crest and Hockey Canada shoulder patch. I have a supply of these and they should also be available to you at the clinic.

You will also need a red armband. These can also be purchased at sporting goods stores that sell referee jerseys. You can buy specific referee jerseys that have Snap-on arm bands or the elastic kind.

There is also a Hockey Alberta Provincial Fee, depending on your level. I believe the level 1 fee is $22 and it goes up by $10 with each level. You are level 2 automatically if you are over 15 years of age by December 31, 2024.  There is also a Hockey Canada fee and insurance If you are not a player on a team with your minor hockey association. You pay these fees as part of your registration on-line when you sign up for the clinic.

If you play hockey on a registered SAMHA team, you do not pay the insurance fee. This fee is covered in your regular hockey registration as a player. This would be one of the Raider Rep Teams or any team in SAMHA that plays in the Federation league. The other fees (provincial and zone admin) are to register you with the North Region Referees Committee, Hockey Alberta Referees and with Hockey Canada, Referees Branch.
