ABOUT OUR BOARD

St. Albert Minor Hockey Association is a not-for-profit organization that is governed by a 16-member Board of Directors. Six Executive Officers hold direct responsibility for all aspects of the organization; 10 Directors at Large and various committees support them.

The Executive Director is the liaison between the Board and the staff and is responsible for putting Board-recommended actions in place, overseeing the administration of programs and directing the strategic plan for the organization.

Our Board of Directors plays an important role in helping guide the future of hockey in our community, and we are always looking for individuals who want to make a difference.

You do not need to be a hockey expert to get involved. Diverse perspectives, experiences, and skill sets make our organization stronger.

 

What Do I Need to Know?

The Board of Directors is focused on being a diverse group of individuals with various skill sets and experiences.

The criteria to be considered by the Nominations Committee for each candidate include:  

  • Experience collaborating with large groups and working effectively with others 
  • Comfortable and knowledgeable working in an MS-based environment (i.e. Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook) 
  • Prior minor sports volunteer experience would be considered an asset 
  • Conflict resolution skills 
  • Ability to exercise discretion, good judgment and solid decision-making
  • Strong interpersonal skills are needed to interact with staff, coaches, parents, and players 

In addition, in accordance with SAMHA bylaws, all nominees:  

  • Must be a member in good standing under article 2.02, with the exception of 2.02 e  
  • Must not have been found to be of unsound mind by a Court in Canada or elsewhere   
  • Can provide a police check confirmation acceptable to the Board of Directors  
  • Resides within St Albert Minor Hockey Association boundary map, as defined by Hockey Alberta  
  • Shall not have any current sanctions/discipline against them  

The present board must approve nominees that fail to meet the aforementioned criteria.

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT?  

The Board holds monthly meetings during evening hours throughout the year.  Board members are also expected to participate in various committees of the Board and to be available by phone or email as needed.

DIRECTOR AT LARGE

Director-at-Large positions are appointed annually by the Executive Committee. Appointments are made with consideration to an individual’s interests, experience, and areas of expertise.

The following outlines some of the potential opportunities available; however, positions are often shaped based on the evolving needs of the program and the unique skill set of each individual.

Create awareness and educate the Association on opportunities to provide a safer environment for all participants.

Coordinate the retention and attraction of volunteers for two events: player evaluations and Minor Hockey.

Throughout the evaluation process, act as an impartial representative on behalf of St. Albert Minor Hockey, its members, and its players.

The Director of U9 and Below works closely with the HOCVP and provides leadership and oversight for programming, operations within the U7 and U9 divisions.

To promote female hockey initiatives within the community and develop strategies that align with this.

Responsible for overseeing and implementing a comprehensive coach mentorship program; play a crucial role in developing and supporting the growth of hockey coaches at various levels.

Lead the Manager Mentorship group and be a resource for team Managers.
